  • Adele H. Stamp Student Union

"Bear Me Into Freedom: Frederick Douglass and the Struggle for America's Promise" will be screened free from 9:30 - 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6 at Hoff Theater at Stamp Student Union. No registration is necessary. The film producer will speak on this immersive, panoramic film that is designed to make viewers feel like companions walking alongside Douglass on his journey from bondage to freedom—and into his lifelong struggle to make America's promise of equality a lived reality. The one-hour film follows his odyssey from being born into slavery in Talbot County, Maryland as Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey to his emergence as Frederick Douglass, the celebrated writer, orator, abolitionist, and advocate for emancipation and equal justice.

Descendants of Frederick Douglass and descendants of people who were enslaved in Talbot County during Douglass’s childhood appear in the film and are heard in its voiceovers. One of those is Marshall “LB” Bailey IV, a sixth-generation descendant of Douglass, who portrays his ancestor as a young man on the Eastern Shore.

The film is produced by Bear Me Into Freedom collaborative.
