Italian writer Italo Calvino

The Italian Program at the University of Maryland is pleased to present a screening of the documentary "Italo Calvino: The Writer in the Trees," by Italian Director Duccio Chiarini.

On the 100th anniversary of Italo Calvino, the most important Italian writers of the twentieth century, this documentary provides a fresh look and a unique perspective on the relationship between the author’s work and his own times, analyzed through the lens of his novel, The Baron in the Trees (Il Barone Rampante, 1957). The documentary premiered at the Giornata degli Autori at the Venice Film Festival in August 2023.

The event is in collaboration with the French and the Italian Department, and the Program in Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Maryland, and with the Italian Department at Johns Hopkins University, and it is made possible by the generous support of the Casa Italiana Sociocultural Center, and the Italian Cultural Institute in Washington, D.C.
