Exploring AI in Research
- To
- Edward St. John Learning and Teaching Center

Curious about how generative AI might support your research, and influence your instruction of research methods? Wondering about the possibilities—and limitations—of tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and specialized research AI? Join us for an in-person half-day session where we'll pool our experiences and explore together.
What:
- Literature Review & Research Planning: Share experiences with tools like Elicit, Google Notebook LM, and Semantic Scholar—what's working, what isn't, and where the opportunities might be
- Research Design & Question Development: Discuss how AI might assist (or complicate) research question refinement, methodology selection, and protocol development
- Data Analysis Possibilities: Consider AI applications for both quantitative and qualitative analysis—with honest conversations about benefits and concerns
Who:
- Instructors exploring AI's role in their own research, and considering how to incorporate AI when teaching undergraduate research methods
- Non-faculty may be admitted at a later date (space permitting)
Join us for in-person facilitated discussions, experience sharing, expert insights from UMD colleagues, and collaborative exploration.
We are committed to bringing together curious, cautious researchers to share what we're learning and explore possibilities together. Come with questions, experiences (positive and negative), and an open mind. Let's explore these tools thoughtfully, together.
