One Stage, Many Languages is a collaboration between the School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (SLLC), the Language House, and Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies (TDPS) at the University of Maryland dedicated to celebrating linguistic and cultural diversity through theatre. By featuring short plays, scenes, and monologues from contemporary world theatre in their original languages—with students performing, translating, and contextualizing each piece—the festival bridges academic learning and artistic practice.
The festival includes performances in five languages (French, German, Japanese, Persian, and Spanish) featuring students from SLLC with support of TDPS graduate students as lead dramaturgs and directors. In addition to the staged readings, a public lobby display will showcase students’ research, translations, and creative reflections, allowing them to share their classroom learning with peers and the broader UMD community.
All members of the campus community are invited to join us for the performances and the reception that follows. Performances are short, dynamic, and accessible through English summaries or projected subtitles.
