The 2026 Universities Studying Slavery Conference at the University of Maryland, College Park

Join The 1856 Project at the University of Maryland for the Universities Studying Slavery consortium’s free annual conference. The conference will highlight the long and interconnected histories of American slavery and freedom. UMD’s unique location near both the seat of our government in Washington D.C. and the historic homes of freedom seekers like Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass invites attendees to think creatively about the relationship between notions of freedom and unfreedom. Additionally, the conference will explore themes key to America’s founding values: truth, liberty, and justice.
