Join Dr. Periloux Peay and Dr. Jason Nichols from AAAS, and Black Girls Vote for the Upcoming Debate watch parties! This event is co-sponsored by Government and Politics, Center for Democracy and Civic Engagement, and Black Girls Vote! The Presidential Debate will be on Tuesday, September 10th and the Vice Presidential Debate will be on Tuesday, October 1st. Both Watch Parties will open doors at 8:45PM and be in Shoemaker Building, Room 2102.
Dr. Peay is an Assistant Professor in the Department of African American Studies. He received his Ph.D. in Political Science with an emphasis on American Politics and Public Policy from The University of Oklahoma in 2020. Prior to graduate studies, he spent seven years working in secondary education in the Houston metropolitan area. His research examines how those from under-represented communities employ collective strategies to shape political processes and outcomes from within and outside political institutions in America. His current research agenda is supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Build and Broaden Program. His work can be found in Politics, Groups, and Identities, the Journal of Race, Ethnicity, and Politics, Social Science Quarterly, Congress and the Presidency, and the National Review of Black Politics. He is a native of Southeast Texas, an avid music connoisseur, an enthusiastic foodie, and a practitioner of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Dr. Jason Nichols is an award winning full-time senior lecturer in the Department of African American Studies and was the longtime editor-in-chief of Words Beats & Life: The Global Journal of Hip-Hop Culture, the first peer-reviewed journal of Hip-hop Studies. He co-edited La Verdad: An International Dialogue on Hip-Hop Latinidades (Ohio State University Press). Dr. Nichols is also a progressive political and social analyst whose work has been featured in publications such as Newsweek, The Guardian, Al Jazeera, Foxnews.com, NBCNews.com, The Hill, MIC.com, Independent Journal Review, The Baltimore Afro American, Bustle, The Daily Caller, The Baltimore Sun, The New York Daily News, and more. He makes regular appearances on Fox News Channel, Al Jazeera English, Newsmax, NewsNation, MSNBC, Sky News, Sky News Arabia, CheddarTV, i24News and TRT World News along with many other TV and radio outlets. Dr. Nichols is a Newsmax TV contributor and has been an advisor/consultant for major Presidential and Gubernatorial campaigns.
Black Girls Vote (BGV) is a grassroots, nonpartisan organization created to represent the national and international concerns of women of color. We seek to uplift and empower communities of color by educating and inspiring women of color to understand the public policy decisions affecting their families and communities. We are dedicated to using our collective voice to transform areas where bias has the most profound impact on the lives of women of color.
