Join the University of Maryland's ASL Minor program for a screening of Apple's Deaf President Now!, a powerful film that tells the story of the historic 1988 student-led protest at Gallaudet University.
This film spotlights how the Deaf community came together to advocate for representation, equality, and the right to have a Deaf president lead the world's only university designed to serve Deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Following the unexpected appointment of a hearing president, the students, faculty, staff, and alumni united in a landmark civil rights movement that became a watershed moment in Deaf history.
This movie screening offers an opportunity to learn more about the Deaf President Now! movement, Deaf culture, advocacy, and the ongoing importance of representation and accessibility.
