Join us for an evening of storytelling and a reception with SPH Dean Boris Lushniak for the 2026 SPH Convocation!

The son of immigrants, Boris Lushniak, MD, MPH, was born far from the heights of public health leadership. But over time, Lushniak served as U.S. Acting Surgeon General under President Obama, deputy surgeon general, and rose through the U.S. Public Health Service ranks over 27 years to lead as a rear admiral. Lushniak held key roles after 9/11, including serving at Ground Zero and combating anthrax sent through the U.S. Postal Service. He provided care to Ebola patients in Liberia and helped lead FDA response for the 2009 H1N1 pandemic. Now in his final year as Dean of the School of Public Health, learn about the stories behind the titles, and ask about anything from his first job to that time he was almost an astronaut to helping grow SPH into its now-20th year.

Along with the School of Public Health, the evening is co-sponsored by College Park Scholars’ Global Public Health program, Public Health Beyond Borders and the Global Health Initiative.

The event will be held on the UMD campus in Edward St. John Learning and Teaching Center, Room 0202, and a reception will follow. All are welcome!
