The theme of Women’s History Month 2025 draws inspiration from Haunani-Kay Trask, a Native Hawaiian activist, educator, author, poet, and a leader of the Hawaiian sovereignty movement. “Resistance Is Its Own Reward”, one of Trask’s most famous quotes from the text Native Daughter: Colonialism and Sovereignty in Hawai'i, empowers and compels us to remember that our work towards equity, freedom, and justice may not be fully realized within our lifetimes - but it is our duty to continue to make way for those who come after us, just as those who came before us did.
“What drives independence in all of us today is resistance”. - Haunani-Kay Trask

Zoom Event: What is Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies? A Harriet Tubman Department Open House
Have you ever wondered about what Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies is or why our department is named after Harriet Tubman? Are you interested in how to learn more about LGBTQ+ issues and dive into the rich field of Queer Studies? Maybe you are concerned about how health, gender, and sexuality are connected and want to explore them through film. Or maybe you are looking for a place to explore intersections of race and gender through visual art and culture, or through learning about the history and lived experiences of Black Women. All of these are topics you can explore through classes in the Harriet Tubman Department's courses and undergraduate programs. Please join us for this virtual open house where you can learn about our Summer and Fall 2025 courses and talk with the department about how our programs and courses can fit into different careers and enhance your future at UMD.
