UMWE poses for group picture in The Clarice's Grand Pavilion.

The UMD Wind Ensemble (UMWE) performs its season opening concert featuring music inspired by life in large, bustling cities. Leonard Bernstein's Symphonic Dances from West Side Story transcribed for winds by Paul Lavender will be the highlight of the concert. Some of the other works featured will include Scott Boerma's Cityscape composed for a performance in Carnegie Hall, and a piece inspired by the hip-hop sub-genre "trap music" of Atlanta, Georgia—the hometown of composer Marie A. Douglas.

About the UMD Wind Ensemble (UMWE)

Under the direction of Andrea Brown, UMWE performs works from the most respected repertoire written for wind band and chamber ensembles with a focus on highlighting composers from underrepresented populations.
