Abstract

We often say that the Nordic Seas sustain the AMOC, but how does an area covering only 0.75% of the world's oceans have such a significant impact on global climate and its variability? In this talk, I will address this question and present findings indicating that there is yet no observational consensus on a declining AMOC at higher latitudes. Additionally, I will discuss recent and ongoing research concerning what determines the coherence of ocean circulation at higher latitudes, as well as some of the challenges that need to be tackled in the near future.
