Calvert Hall under construction, University of Maryland, circa 1916

On February 1st, 2023, The 1856 Project will hold its inaugural symposium. The 1856 Project investigates the University of Maryland’s connection to the regional context of slavery. It is our local chapter of the Universities Studying Slavery, an international group of colleges and universities encouraging their campuses to think about their connections to slavery and the slave trade while addressing historical and contemporary issues surrounding race and inequality in higher education. The inaugural symposium will be held at the Stamp Student Union and is open to the public. Register Here.
