Shamel Pitts’ TRIBE: Black Hole: Trilogy and Triathlon

  • To
  • The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center
Three dancers entwined.

Artist, dancer and choreographer Shamel Pitts presents Black Hole, the third in his Black Series trilogy of works built on the Gaga movement language developed by Israeli choreographer Ohad Naharin. It’s a kaleidoscopic performance art experience using dynamic movement, original sound, innovative lighting and effects and cinematic video projections that uses the idea of the transformational environment of a black hole to create an atmosphere of mystery toward what it encompasses. The work researches and shares an odyssey in which three gifted Black artists (all of African diaspora) unite to create a trinity of vigor, afrofuturism and embrace.

A graduate of and now an adjunct faculty member at The Juilliard School, Shamel danced for seven years with Batsheva Dance Company under Ohad Naharin. He is the artistic director/founder of TRIBE, a New York–based multidisciplinary arts collective and was a 2020 Guggenheim Fellow.
