In this special performance, NOI+F fellows take the reins in a program performed entirely without a conductor. Members of the 2023 NOI Philharmonic will lead each other in chamber orchestra repertoire by Alberto Ginastera, William Grant Still and Franz Joseph Haydn. Ginastera’s Varaciones concertantes begins the program by highlighting each section of the orchestra, spotlighting the virtuosity and personalities of each. Still's classic American style is woven into Wood Notes, a suite inspired by his love of nature and K. Mitchell Pilcher’s poetry. The Philharmonic closes the evening with Haydn’s “Trauer” symphony exploring the tense, energetic and dramatic potential of the minor-keyed symphony.
