Each built upon the same classical four-movement model, and each a pinnacle of its stylistic genre, Schumann’s D minor Trio and Ravel’s A minor Trio invite us into vastly different worlds of sound, the one dense and seething, the other transparent and sensuous. With “admirable precision, unanimity of expression, and a lovely, focused tonal quality” [Fanfare Magazine] Andrist, Stern, and Honigberg navigate these worlds: the Basque dance rhythms, jazz idioms, gamelan sonorities, Malaysian verse form, Baroque passacaglia and irregular meters of Ravel; the impetuous yearning, playful marches, dramatic recitative and astonishing emotional juxtapositions of Schumann.
